A little bit of Symphony and Notes history

Interesting article in the latest Wired Magazine on Ray Ozzie.  One part I specifically enjoyed was reading how an agreement with Lotus' Mitch Kapor on the development of Lotus Symphony (not the one we all know today) later led on to the development of Iris Associates funded by Lotus, which released Lotus Notes on December 8, 1989.  Iris was bought by Lotus for US$94 million, and one year later, Lotus was bought by IBM for US$3.5 billion.  Ray Ozzie stayed on for another 2 years: 

"I was cynical of IBM, but they took over Notes when we had 2 million users, and now there are 150 million. With Lotus that never would have happened."

Update from yesterday's Open Mic Call on Daylight Savings Time

If you did not get a chance to attend yesterday's Open Mic Call on Daylight Savings Time, a couple of questions were asked from folks who weren't 100% on whether they were "all set" or not for this year's DST changes (in the US, specifically).

As a general rule of thumb, if you did all your patching correctly last year and had no issues, you should not have any issues this year. IBM/Lotus recommended on the call that whenever possible it's always best practice to keep up to date on the latest maintenance release of your specific code stream. For any international organization, be sure that you have also patched your users/servers outside the US. Any country-specific technotes on DST you can find on the knowledge collection on DST (link below).

They indicated that 656, 7.0.3 and 8.0.1 should be all set as far as patches go. Be sure to check out the Knowledge Collection on Daylight Saving Time (DST) in Notes/Domino and Maintenance Releases, Fix Packs and Additional Fixes for Lotus Domino and Notes.

It's *THAT* time of the year, again...

Yes, for those in North America (or in my case, who administer servers in the Northern Hemisphere), Daylight Savings Time is creeping up on us again.

To be better prepared, IBM will be hosting this coming February 27 a second Notes/Domino Open Mic Session this month to discuss all things DST:

Lotus Notes e Domino 7.0.3 disponíveis

A IBM lançou ontem (16/out) o release 7.0.3 do Lotus Notes e Domino. Focado principalmente como um release de manutenção, algumas novidades foram introduzidas nesta versão:

De acordo com a IBM, a data prevista para lançamento da versão em português está prevista para 19 de dezembro de 2007.

Após esta data, só se poderá marcar provas de certificação na versão 7 e 8 dos produtos.

Notes and Domino 8 Certification Update Exams are out!

IBM Lotus and Prometric just released this wednesday (if I'm not mistaken) the new exams for Notes and Domino 8 Certification:

Anunciado no blog do Ed Brill, a IBM está preparando um novo beta do Lotus Notes 8, que como ele mesmo disse, está muito, mas muito bom! :-)

B2B Magazine: IBM promove evento Lotusphere

Foi noticiado na B2B Magazine online a notícia de que a IBM estará promovendo em maio eventos da Lotusphere (Comes To You?) aqui no Brasil:

É a segunda edição do Lotusphere no País, que acontece no dia 9 de maio, no Hotel Renaissance, em São Paulo. Entre os assuntos que serão debatidos durante o fórum, destacam-se Web 2.0, o futuro da computação social e da colaboração unificada para as empresas, SOA (Arquitetura Orientada a Serviços) e novas tecnologias, como serviços Web, aperfeiçoamentos de programação e de blogs.

Lotus Notes e Domino 6.5.6 disponíveis

Está disponível para download a atualização (Maintenance Release) 6.5.6 do Lotus Notes e Lotus Domino. De acordo com a Lotus, está será a última atualização (fora hotfixes e fixpacks) para a linha (codestream) 6.5 do Lotus Domino.

Historicamente a IBM tem a tradição de suportar os dois últimos codestreams. Recentemente o codestream 6.0.x deixou de ser suportado, e agora a Lotus anuncia a última atualização do codestream 6.5.x, já em preparação para o lançamento do Lotus Notes e Domino 8 que está programado para o final do primeiro semestre de 2007.

Novidades no Lotus Notes e Domino 6.5.6:

Lotus Notes 6.5.6

• Quotas para arquivos de correio são respeitadas em réplicas locais - Anteriormente à versão 6.5.6, um usuário conseguia bular o tamanho de quota definido pelo administrador na sua base de correio se trabalhasse nela localmente em vez da réplica no servidor. Agora na versão 6.5.6, um administrador pode definir através de Policies parâmetros do notes.ini e configurações que guarantem que a definição de tamanho da caixa de correio do usuário seja mantida na réplica local.
• Novo status do Notes Instant Messaging: "Em reunião" - Este status foi introduzido na versão 7.5 do Lotus Sametime. Anterior à versão 6.5.6, quando um usuário do Sametime 7.5 estive com o status online definido para "Em reunião", ele aparecia offline no Notes Instant Messaging. Agora este novo status é refletido corretamente.

Lotus Domino Server 6.5.6

• Suporte para receber objetos TNEF encapsulados ( arquivos winmail.dat) - O Microsoft Outlook e o Microsoft Exchange podem ser configurados para enviar mensagens a outros usuários de Outlook/Exchange encapsulando dados no formato Transport Neutral Encapsulated Format. Quando configurado desta forma, o cliente Outlook envia uma mensagem multipart/mixed MIME, onde o conteúdo Microsoft Rich Text Format (RTF) é enviado como simples texto na primeira parte da mensagem multipart/mixed MIME. Os dados RTF originais são então encapsulados no objeto TNEF, junto com quaisquer outros dados da mensagem original: anexos, objetos OLE, etc.
  
  Nas versões anteriores ao Lotus Domino Server 6.5.6, quando usuários Notes recebia essa mensagem, era possível ler o contéudo em texto, mas não conseguia acessar nenhum dos arquivos anexos na mensagem original. Agora na versão 6.5.6, o MIME itemizer do servidor reconhece objetos TNEF, extrai os arquivos anexados na mensagem encapsulados no objetto TNEF e os adiciona à mensagem antes de gravá-la no mail.box do router.
• Domino for i5/OS - O servidor Lotus Domino agora é suportando no i5/OS V5R4.

Fim de Suporte para Lotus Notes e Domino 6.0.x

De acordo com a IBM Lotus, abril de 2007 marca o fim do suporte para as versões 6.0.x do Lotus Notes e Domino. A ultima atualização foi o release 6.0.5, lançado em 29 de março de 2005. Caso você tenha algum bug numa versão 6.0.5 , a IBM recomenda o upgrade para o release 6.5.x.

Gazeta Mercantil: Lotus cresce 24,5% no Brasil

Deu na Gazeta Mercantil de hoje:

Em 2006, a IBM registrou um crescimento de 24,5% nas vendas de novas licenças das soluções Lotus, em relação a 2005. A linha tem produtos de mensagens instantâneas, portal, educação, entre outros sistemas para auxiliar a colaboração entre funcionários de empresas.

DST 2007: Updated Rooms and Resources Hotfix for Busytime information

If you use the Rooms and Resources feature of Notes and Domino at your company, be sure to view the updated Technote 12564 - Using the Rooms and Resources hotfix agent to correct busytime information due to 2007 Daylight Saving Time (DST) change:

Revision 1.1

Corrects an issue with 24-hour resources that no longer show as available in busytime after being processed by version 1.0 of the hotfix agent. NOTE: It is important that customers who have run the 1.0 version of this agent run version 1.1 in report mode to determine if they are impacted by this issue. Running this agent again in corrective mode will resolve any issues with 24-hour resources seen with the previous version of the agent.
