IBM launches Ubuntu-based "Microsoft-free" virtual desktop bundle

"According to IBM, the virtual Linux desktop suite could cost, for large companies, as little as $59 per worker. That would include a minimal configuration of $49 for the VERDE desktop virtualization software from a third vendor, Virtual Bridges, $10 for Ubuntu Linux support, and no cost for the Lotus Symphony productivity software."

Open Mic Call - Lotus Domino 8 on Dec. 12, 2007

IBM/Lotus will be hosting another Open Mic call, this time specific to Lotus Domino 8 Server questions!

The calls will be hosted on Wednesday, December 12 at 10:00 AM EST (13:00 Brazil) and 9:oo PM (00:00 AM - midnight Brazil).

IBM will be hosting an Open Mic conference call with Lotus Development and Support Engineers to discuss new features in the new Lotus Domino® 8 server on Wednesday, December 12, 2007. This call will take place in two sessions, at 10:00 AM EST and 9:00 PM EST, to facilitate participation from customers worldwide.

Project Bandaloop's performance at IBM São Paulo

Here's a short 3 minute video from last night's performance of Project Bandaloop at IBM Brasil's 90th birthday celebration in São Paulo:

The show was great, but very difficult to take pictures as the lighting was not optimal and the dancers were quite far (for a picture taking on a point-and-shoot Canon 450). But great to watch, nonetheless.

IBM celebrates 90 years of presence in Brasil

IBM is celebrating today and tomorrow it's 90th anniversary since opening shop in Brasil, back in 1917 when it was still called Computing Tabulating Recording Company. In 1920 it was contracted by the Brazilian Government for tracking the census of 1920. In this same year the first typewriters were introduced by CTR Co.

Here are a few facts about IBM in Brazil:

• IBM Brazil was the first subsidiary to be opened by IBM outside the United States.
• 1924: IBM is officially registered in Brazil as International Business Machines Co. of Delaware.
• 1939: Thomas Watson opens IBM's first factory in South America, at Benfica, Rio de Janeiro.
• 1949: IBM World Trade Corporation is the new name for it's operation in Brazil.
• 1960: The company's registration changes again to "IBM do Brasil".
• 1963 marks the opening of IBM's branch office in Brasil's new capital, Brasília.
• In 1971 the factory at Sumaré in the state of São Paulo marks the beginning of a new era, with production of the S/370 beginning one year later in 1971. This site is today known as the Centro de Tecnologia IBM, where it's Global Delivery Center is located on what was once the factory floor.
• In 1981 IBM do Brasil begins shipping PROFS, it's mainframe-based e-mail system.
• Another name change in 1984: IBM Brasil.

IBM Brasil comemora 90 anos

A IBM comemora este ano 90 anos de Brasil, e para isso, trouxe o show do Project Bandaloop para uma peformance gratuita em sua sede na Rua Tutóia, em São Paulo, nos dias 4 e 5 de abril.

Para quem não conhece, o Project Bandaloop é um grupo de dança que faz suas performances pendurados de rappel. Eles apareceram no Fantástico do último fim de semana.

Se você estiver em São Paulo nestes dias, passe na sede da IBM para ver esse show imperdível.

New IBM Certification: IBM Certified SOA Associate

IBM has released an entry-level certification for those interested in validating their ability to "articulate the business and technical value of SOA. The candidate can describe the business structure of an organization at a high level and identify where in that line of business SOA can provide value."
The recommend skills are as follows:

• Basic understanding of security concepts
• Basic understanding of multiple operating systems including z/OS
• Basic understanding of broker Publish/Subscribe functionality
• Basic understanding of supported WebSphere Message Broker transports
• Administration experience on at least one supported operating system
• Good understanding of at least one supported relational database product
• Good understanding of the Eclipse tooling platform
• Administration experience on WebSphere MQ V5.3 or WebSphere MQ V6.0

This certification is an addition to the Service Oriented Architecture certification roadmap, which already included the intermediate-level IBM Certified SOA Solution Designer. For more information, visit the ibm.com/certify site.

Apple's iPhone Keynote: a missed opportunity for IBM?

All hype aside on the newly announced iPhone from Apple, Inc. (since it removed "Computer" from it's company name), one thing really annoyed me at the keynote:

Why was iPhone IMAP support for Microsoft's Exchange announced, but no Lotus Domino/Notes???

Given that Microsoft is greater competitor to Apple than IBM is, and IBM has been a long time partner with Apple (back from the PowerPC days as well as launching Lotus Notes 7.0.2 and Lotus Sametime for the Mac) one has to ask the question:

How could IBM allow a *major* announcement like that go by and note have IBM Lotus Notes and/or Domino be a part of it? Domino has supported IMAP for as long as I can remember (4.5? 4.6?).

I can't get over this... Is it just me?
